Spring has come once again and with the change in seasons, have come changes to our farm. One big change is the type of fish in our aquaponic ecosystem. Currently our fish tanks have tilapia and koi suplying the all-natural nutrients for about 1800 square feet of lettuce, kales, herbs, squash, and tomatoes. While Koi are beautiful fish and great nutrient producers, ours have grown so large that they are nearly out-competing our tilapia for feed. We will be having a huge koi sale in May to make more space for the tilapia. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates on the Spring koi sale. As we prepare to say goodbye to our koi, we are welcoming in a batch of ‘Wipers’ (a hybrid of striped and white bass) to our system. These little fish have proven to be incredibly active and voracious feeders. Their love of cooler water temperatures and increased marketability makes them a great fit for our market in Colorado. We are excited to have them and look forward to watching them grow with our farm. The Growhaus has gone through some amazing renovations to their facility as well. While these renovations are not entirely completed, the space is really coming together. It will be a great environment for education and hands-on experiences. Public tours of The Growhaus are every Friday and Saturday at 10:00 AM. Come by and see what’s going on. |
